Black-Necked Stilt
Himantopus mexicanus
Black-Necked Stilts are year-round denizens of California, and may be observed at many locations with shallow, muddy waters. It often walks somewhat delicately within a pond looking for food (upper left). In addition to its black-and-white body, it's very long pinkish-red legs distinguish it from other species (only flamingos have legs that are proportionately longer relative to body size). They often cluster in large groups (upper right). The parent in the lower left was calling repeatedly for its fledges to come out and follow. After a few minutes of vociferous coaxing (or scolding), the three fledges appeared (lower right). The top photos were taken at the MLK Regional Shoreline in Oakland; those on the bottom were taken at the Hayward Regional Shoreline. (Click on images to see enlarged versions.)
