House Wren
Troglodytes aedon
House Wrens are migrants in many of the U.S. states. In the northern half, they are summer residents only. In many of the most southern states, they are winter residents only. But along the California coast except for the most northern part, they are year-round residents. They look somewhat similar to the Bewick's Wren except that they lack its distinctive white eyebrow. They have the barred tails that are often pointed up when perched. The individual in the left photo, taken at Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve, CA on April 19, 2018, is a grayish brown. The individual on the right, taken by the San Pablo Reservoir, CA on June 29, 2018, is browner. (Click on images to see enlarged versions.)
