Blue-Winged Teal
Anas discors
The Blue-Winged Teal family (upper left) was observed at the MLK Regional Shoreline in Oakland, CA on January 28, 2016, in Elmhurst Creek just before it hits San Leandro Bay. The upper right photo offers a better view of the male. The bottom left photo is of a different female, this one also observed on the same day at MLK but in the Edgewater Seasonal Wetland section by Damon Slough. The female Blue-Winged Teals look similar to female Cinammon Teals, but the white at the base of its beak and the dark eye line help to identify the Blue-Winged. On this particular day, three different types of Teals were present at Edgewater: Green-Winged, Cinammon, and Blue-Winged. (Click on images to see enlarged versions.)
