Red-Breasted Sapsucker
Sphyrapicus ruber
This Red-Breasted Sapsucker was observed near the Nature Center at Tilden Regional Park, CA on November 4, 2016. I have also seen one in a northern residential area of Berkeley. In both places, they were on trees like this one with many small holes drilled for it to get at the sap and insects within. This species can be found along most of the west coast of the U.S. and Canada, although it generally only winters in the San Francisco Bay Area and heads northward up the coast to breed.
